Managing pain or injury during Lockdown - November 2020 - Andy Laing, Chartered Physiotherapist

2020 has certainly been a year to remember & for many of us it has brought big changes to our physical, psychological & social routines. Life may have become more sedentary either through limiting or changing our opportunities to exercise or placing us behind a computer screen for longer than we’re used to. Lots of us have been working from home which can bring its postural challenges - working in spaces & surroundings that may not be as familiar or ergonomically friendly for our bodies.

For others COVID-19 has created a change in routine & circumstance that has allowed more opportunity to exercise & embrace the outdoors. Our bodies are built to move & often don’t cope well with long periods in one position. They also don’t respond well to excessive increases in exercise. Many of these changes in routine can lead to injury or postural & work-related pain. “According to Women’s Health magazine, BUPA conducted a recent survey which estimated that 7.2million Brits suffered an exercise-related injury during the first lockdown”.

Sometimes the solution is simple, such as a change or re-evaluation of our working practices. Looking at our work station setup, taking regular breaks & adding simple exercises into our working routine can be all it takes to make us feel better. You may find this link helpful:

If you have sustained an injury from doing something new or increasing your training too quickly, just remember the body is fantastic at healing itself. If you give it the right conditions many of our bodies strains & sprains will heal on their own. For simple advice on injury management you may find the following site helpful:
